Synonyms:- Bulliarda vaillantii, Hydrophila vaillantii, Tillaea vaillantii,
illaeastrum vaillantii
Meaning:- Crassula (L) Succuulent-little-plant.
Vaillantii (L) For French botanist Sébastien Vaillant (1669-1722), who
worked at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and took a particular interest in
succulents.
General description:- Laxly branched, slender annual.
Stems:-
1) 2-6 cm, erect or ascending.
Leaves:-
1) 2-4(-6) mm, linear-oblong, semi~terete or somewhat flattened, obtuse, bright
green to reddish.
Flowers:-
1) 4-merous, solitary or paired; on slender pedicels longer than the leaves, forming
small, irregular cymes.
2) Petals longer than the sepals, ovate-lanceolate, acute, pink or white.
Fruit:-
1) Ripe follicles divergent, each with 8-12 seeds.
Key features:-
1) Petals longer than the sepals.
2) Leaves obtuse; flowers in cymes.
3) Follicles usually with 8-12 seeds.
Habitat:- Seasonally wet, sandyand loamy places,small depressions, rock pools,
0-500m, mainly on non-calcareous substrates
Distribution:- Rare in Peloponnisos, and SW mainland Greece, also reported from
Strofades S of Zakinthos - Scattered in S & SE Europe. On Crete currently known
only from the island of Gavdos
Flowering time:- Apl-May.
